Quick-draw duel games for Red Dead fans

· Avinash Kumar

Cowboy Duel runs on iPhone. The game is available in English, German, Arabic and Chinese.

In Red Dead Redemption 2 you play Arthur Morgan, an outlaw in a fictional America of 1899. Duels are rare in the game. They turn up in a handful of story missions and in a few free-roam challenges, and many players remember them for the long stare before anyone moves.

If that standoff is the part you’d happily replay, this page compares the console duel with a duel you play using a phone.

How a duel works in Red Dead Redemption 2

Guides such as RDR2.org’s duelling guide describe three steps:

  1. Squeeze the trigger gently to fill a draw meter. Press too hard and you draw early with little time to aim.
  2. Press fully to draw. Dead Eye slows time, and the fuller the meter, the longer you get to place shots.
  3. Fire. Shooting the hand or gun can disarm instead of kill, and some missions require that.

So the console duel rewards patience and precise aim more than raw reaction speed.

How a phone quick-draw game differs

Cowboy Duel (my game) keeps the standoff and drops the aiming. You hold the iPhone upright like a revolver in a holster, wait for “FLIP!”, then whip it horizontal. The motion sensors time the draw in milliseconds. Draw before the signal and it counts as a false start.

Great

The game is overall great. It feels like an actual duel. The only problem is is that my phone doesn’t pick up the flip about a half second later

That half-second lag is a real limitation: a slow, hesitant flip registers later than a sharp one, so commit to the movement. Playing against people you know is where it works best:

It’s super fun

It’s super fun and all my friends and me go against each other 👍

Who it suits

If you enjoy the console duels for the story and the aiming, a phone game won’t replace them. If you liked the moment before the draw and want to settle it with friends in the same room, a quick-draw game covers that in a few seconds per round.
