Kanji of the day widget: a small daily habit

· Avinash Kumar

Kanji Mnemonics runs on iPhone and iPad. The app is available in English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese.

You pick up your phone dozens of times a day. A widget turns some of those moments into a look at one kanji.

Setting it up

Home Screen: touch and hold an empty spot, tap Edit › Add Widget, find Kanji Mnemonics and choose Today’s Kanji.

Lock Screen: touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize › Lock Screen, tap the widget area and add Today’s Kanji.

Turning a glance into memory

Seeing a kanji isn’t the same as remembering it. Small habits help:

  • Say the keyword before reading it. Look at the kanji, guess, then check.
  • Find it once. Look for it in a sign, menu or text that day.
  • Note the hard ones and add them to your review.

Why one a day works

One kanji, seen twenty times in a day, gets a lot of repetition for no effort. It won’t take you to N1 on its own. As a daily nudge to open your reviews, it’s good at its job.

Where it’s from

The Today’s Kanji widget is part of Kanji Mnemonics, alongside the picture stories, readings, quiz and progress tracking.

Questions people ask

Does a widget replace study?
No. It's a reminder and a small extra exposure. Real progress still comes from reviews and reading.
Where is it best: Home or Lock Screen?
Lock Screen gets more glances; Home Screen has room for the picture.
