Kanji mnemonics: how a picture and a short story make a kanji stick
· Avinash Kumar
Kanji Mnemonics runs on iPhone and iPad. The app is available in English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese.
A kanji is a set of strokes with no sound attached. Your brain has nothing to hang it on. A mnemonic gives it a hook: a small scene that ties the shape to a meaning.
How it works
Take 休, “rest”. On the left is 亻, a squeezed form of 人 (person). On the right is 木 (tree). The scene: a person leaning against a tree, resting. Once you have seen that, 休 stops being random lines.
A few more classic ones:
- 明 (bright) = 日 sun + 月 moon. Both lights at once.
- 森 (forest) = three 木 trees.
- 好 (like) = 女 woman + 子 child. A mother holding the child she loves.
These examples are well-known textbook ones, here to show the idea.
Why a picture helps
A keyword alone (“rest”) still has to be glued to the shape. A drawing does the gluing for you, because you see the person and the tree in the strokes. That is why Kanji Mnemonics (my app) gives every kanji one keyword, one story and one picture, from N5 to N1.
When to write your own
On r/LearnJapanese a common piece of advice is: “if you are using mnemonics, you should be making your own mnemonics.” It has a point. A story you invented sticks better than one you read. In practice:
- Use the ready-made picture first.
- If a kanji still slips after two or three reviews, write your own story for it.
Who mnemonics don’t suit
Some learners say they have never met a mnemonic worth the space in their head. If you remember kanji fine by reading and writing them, you don’t need this. Mnemonics help most in the first few hundred kanji, when nothing looks familiar yet.
Honest feedback
Very beautiful
Here and there a few improvements would make the app wonderfull! I already learned my first 5 kanji, i think some pictures or resemblance are not perfect but when done better it deserves a 5 stars

That’s fair. Some pictures work better than others, and I keep redrawing the weak ones.

Questions people ask
- Are mnemonics cheating?
- No. They get you to the meaning faster. Reading real Japanese is what makes the kanji automatic later.
- Should I make my own mnemonics?
- For the kanji that refuse to stick, yes. Ready-made ones save time on the easy majority.
