Can you see the Andromeda Galaxy without a telescope?

Yes, under a dark sky. The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) looks like a small, faint, oval smudge about where Cassiopeia’s W points down towards Pegasus. It’s around 2.5 million light-years away, the farthest thing most people can see without optics.
When to look
Autumn evenings in the northern hemisphere, September to December, when Andromeda is high. Pick a moonless night away from city lights. It’s also visible from southern latitudes like Australia and South America, low in the northern sky in spring evenings there.
Two ways to find it
From Cassiopeia:
- Find the W of Cassiopeia in the north-east.
- Use the deeper V of the W as an arrowhead. It points roughly towards Andromeda.
- Look about three fists away for a faint fuzzy patch.
From Pegasus:
- Find the Great Square of Pegasus.
- From its corner star Alpheratz, go two stars along the curved line of Andromeda to Mirach.
- From Mirach, turn up towards Cassiopeia: one fainter star, then the same distance again to the smudge.
What to expect
To the naked eye, a small grey oval. Use averted vision: look a little to one side and it gets clearer. Binoculars show a long glow with a bright core, sometimes with its companion galaxy M32 as a fuzzy star. The spiral arms in pictures need long camera exposures.
Why it hides
A bright Moon, city glow or haze all wipe it out. If you can see the Milky Way, you’ll see Andromeda.
Sky Map (my app) labels Cassiopeia, Pegasus and Andromeda in the live AR view, which helps you start the star-hop in the right place.

Questions people ask
- When is Andromeda easiest to see?
- On autumn evenings in the northern hemisphere, when it's high in the sky. It's visible from mid-southern latitudes too, but low in the north.
- What does the Andromeda Galaxy look like to the naked eye?
- A small, faint, oval smudge, not a spiral. Most people see its bright centre; the full size shows only in photos.
- How far away is the Andromeda Galaxy?
- About 2.5 million light-years, which makes it the most distant object most people can see with their own eyes.
