Sky Map App for iPhone: What to Check Before You Pick One

Sky Map runs on iPhone. The app is available in 13 languages, including English, Japanese, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

Every star app shows the same photo on its App Store page: a phone held up against a purple sky with lines between the stars. The differences only show up when you’re standing in a cold field at 11 p.m.

I make Sky Map, so read this with that in mind. These are the things I’d test with any of them.

1. Does the overlay line up with the real sky?

Hold the phone up at a bright star you can see. Does the label sit on it, or a hand-width to one side? Phones use the compass, the gyroscope and GPS for this, and the compass is the weak link. If it’s off, see what to do when a sky map points the wrong way.

2. Does it tell you what you can see tonight?

Knowing where Saturn is doesn’t help if it set an hour ago or it’s cloudy. Sky Map has a planet timeline for the night and a sky conditions check (cloud cover, humidity, best time to look).

3. Does it work offline?

The best skies are usually far from a phone mast. Sky Map’s core map works without a connection.

4. Can a beginner get to the sky quickly?

Not every review is kind, and this one matters:

Intro screens and paywalls between you and the sky are a real problem in this category, and I take that review seriously. If an app makes you wait, that’s a fair reason to try another.

5. Does it teach you anything?

After a few nights, you want to find Orion without the phone. Sky Map has a Constellation Academy with artwork and the mythology behind all 88 constellations.

What it costs

Free to download, the AR view is free, and some features are paid. One reviewer wished it were a bit cheaper and said they’d probably buy the lifetime plan.
