How to find your zodiac constellation in the real night sky
· Avinash Kumar
Sky Map runs on iPhone. The app is available in 13 languages, including English, Japanese, German, French, Italian and Spanish.
Your star sign is named after a real constellation. People are often surprised that it’s hard to see on their birthday. There’s a simple reason.
Why your sign hides on your birthday
The zodiac constellations sit along the Sun’s yearly path. Your sign is the one the Sun was in front of when you were born, so around your birthday it’s up in the daytime, lost in sunlight. About six months later it’s on the opposite side of the sky and up at night.
(The dates have drifted over the past two thousand years too, because Earth’s axis slowly wobbles. Astrology kept the old dates. Astronomy uses the current positions.)
When to look, roughly
| Constellation | Best evening months (Northern Hemisphere) |
|---|---|
| Aries, Taurus | November to January |
| Gemini, Cancer | January to March |
| Leo, Virgo | March to May |
| Libra, Scorpius | May to July |
| Sagittarius, Capricornus | July to September |
| Aquarius, Pisces | September to November |
Easy ones and hard ones
Scorpius, Leo, Taurus and Gemini have bright stars and real shapes. Cancer, Pisces and Aquarius are faint, and from a city you might not see them at all. That’s not your eyes.
Let the phone draw it
In Sky Map, find your sign and the app shows where it is, even when it’s below the horizon or behind the Sun. When it’s up at night, the AR view draws the lines over the real stars.
Great app for finding zodiac constellations
This app works very well, and is fun to use when it is dark outside. Very educational and exciting to actually see the zodiac constellations. Totally recommended!

- Is there a 13th zodiac constellation?
- The Sun also passes through Ophiuchus, between Scorpius and Sagittarius, for a couple of weeks in late November and early December. Astrology leaves it out.
