Stargazing at Achi Village in southern Nagano usually means the Heavens Sonohara Night Tour: a 2,500 m ropeway ride of about 15 minutes up to 1,400 m, a full light-down with a guide’s sky talk of about 20 minutes, and time to watch on your own. Book online two weeks ahead, check the season’s closed periods, and dress for a mountain night.
Why is Achi Village known for stars?
The organisers point to a Ministry of the Environment survey in 2006 that ranked Achi first among places suited to star observation. The village is ringed by mountains, and the tour site sits above the valley lights. The Night Tour started in 2012 and Season 2026 is its 15th.

How to prepare for stargazing at Achi Village
At 1,400 m it is colder than at the base, and winter nights are cold enough that gloves and a hat matter more than a camera. Check the cloud forecast and Moon phase before you buy, because the ticket is not refunded for cloud. The stargazing trip checklist covers the rest.
On a clear night Sky Map (my app) can show which constellations the guide is pointing at, and its core sky map works offline. Keep the screen dim or red so you don’t spoil anyone’s light-down.
Also in Nagano: Nobeyama Radio Observatory and Kiso Observatory.
