Stargazing at Big Bend National Park in West Texas is good all year from almost any dark spot with an open horizon. The NPS measured the darkest night skies of any national park in the lower 48 states here, and DarkSky designated it a Gold Tier Dark Sky Park in 2012.
Why is Big Bend so dark?
The region is remote Chihuahuan Desert, far from big towns. When the park earned Gold Tier status, it had upgraded nearly every outdoor light fixture and cut its lighting energy use by 98%, according to the NPS. Neighbouring Big Bend Ranch State Park is also a Dark Sky Park; together they protect about 1,112,000 acres of dark sky.
Where to stargaze in Big Bend
Ranger suggestions:
- Fossil Discovery Exhibit
- Sotol Vista overlook on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive
- The Rio Grande overlook
- Dugout Wells
- Most backcountry campsites
Many spots are right off paved roads. The park also posts monthly star charts and suggests star hopping, for example from the Big Dipper to Arcturus and on to Spica.
How to prepare for stargazing at Big Bend
- Red light: the park recommends a red flashlight or headlamp to keep night vision and stay safe.
- Comfort: binoculars, a blanket, lawn chairs.
- Pets: allowed along paved roads, not on trails.
- Remoteness: some visitors find this kind of darkness uncomfortable, the NPS writes. Arrive before sunset, finish camp chores in daylight, carry water, and tell someone your route; signal is unreliable.
See the stargazing trip checklist for the full list. I build Sky Map, so take the tip with that in mind: download it before you lose signal, because its core sky map works without internet, and check Tonight’s Sky Conditions (cloud cover, humidity, best time) the afternoon before. For a red screen use iPhone Color Filters (how).
More dark skies: Death Valley, San Pedro Mártir in Mexico.
