Stargazing on Ishigaki and Iriomote: what makes the Yaeyama sky special?

Sky Map runs on iPhone. The app is available in 13 languages, including English, Japanese, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

Ishigaki and Iriomote, in Okinawa’s Yaeyama Islands, sit inside Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, which DarkSky International made Japan’s first International Dark Sky Park in 2018. From here you can see constellations that never rise over Tokyo, including the Southern Cross, and the summer Milky Way runs high.

Why is the Yaeyama sky so good for stargazing?

The islands are Japan’s southernmost territory, about 270 km east of Taiwan. Ishigaki City and Taketomi Town wrote in their application that 84 of the 88 constellations can be observed here, including all 21 first-magnitude stars. DarkSky notes that much of the islands’ land area routinely reaches Silver- and Gold-tier sky quality, even with about 54,000 residents, most of them in Ishigaki City.

Can you see the Southern Cross from Ishigaki?

Yes, in season and low over the sea to the south, so a clear southern horizon matters more than altitude. Our Southern Cross guide explains when and how high.

Where are the stargazing spots on Ishigaki?

DarkSky says tour operators increasingly run night sessions inside the park. Ishigaki town centre is bright, so head out of the city. Two things to know:

  • The Hateruma Island star observation tower has been closed since 2022 (Taketomi Town).
  • NAOJ runs research stations on Ishigaki (Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory and a VERA station); check NAOJ for public hours before you go.

How to prepare for stargazing on Ishigaki and Iriomote

Here the risk is heat, insects and wildlife, not frost: carry water and repellent, watch for traffic on dark roads, and stay on paths at night. Iriomote is home to the endangered Iriomote cat, so drive slowly. Check clouds and the Moon before you go; the stargazing trip checklist has the full list.

Sky Map (my app) shows the southern constellations from your exact position, and its core map works offline on remote beaches.

Other Japanese dark skies: Kozushima, Bisei.

Questions people ask

Is Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park a dark sky park?
Yes. DarkSky International designated it an International Dark Sky Park in 2018, the first in Japan. It started with provisional status while public lighting was being retrofitted.
Can you see the Southern Cross from Ishigaki?
Yes, low over the southern horizon in season. Ishigaki City and Taketomi Town wrote in their application that 84 of the 88 constellations can be seen from the area.
Is the Hateruma star observation tower open?
No. Taketomi Town announced in July 2022 that the Hateruma Island star observation tower closed because of ageing facilities, and no reopening date has been published.
