Stargazing at Pic du Midi de Bigorre in the French Pyrenees happens on organised evenings at the summit observatory, 2,877 m up, which include sunset, astronomy talks and observing. The Pic du Midi area became France’s first International Dark Sky Reserve on 19 December 2013.
Why is Pic du Midi special for stargazing?
The summit is a working observatory with scientific domes, high above most of the haze of the valleys. The dark sky reserve around it was the first of its kind in France, according to DarkSky International.
What does a star evening at Pic du Midi include?
Formats change by season, but the official 2013 press kit and local reports describe:
- a visit of the summit installations,
- sunset from the terraces,
- astronomy activities, then observation with the naked eye and instruments,
- dinner, and for “Nuits au Sommet” a night at the top with a morning visit to scientific domes.
Book through the official Pic du Midi site; weather can cancel the cable car.
How to prepare for stargazing at Pic du Midi
- Altitude and cold: 2,877 m is high mountain. Bring winter clothing in any season.
- Health: if height affects you, ask a doctor before booking.
- Weather: check the forecast and the cable car status on the day.
The full list is in the stargazing trip checklist. I build Sky Map, so weigh this tip accordingly: download it before you travel, since its core sky map works without internet, and check Tonight’s Sky Conditions (cloud cover, humidity, best time) before you set off. For a red screen, use iPhone Color Filters (how).
