Stargazing at Westhavelland: where is the darkest spot near Berlin?

Stargazing at Sternenpark Westhavelland, in Brandenburg west of Berlin, gives you Germany’s first International Dark Sky Reserve, designated in February 2014. The darkest part, the core zone, lies between Gülpe and Nennhausen, and the project describes Gülpe as the darkest place in Germany.
Why is Westhavelland so dark?
It is a thinly populated area of meadows and wetlands along the Havel, inside a nature park. The Sternenpark project and the district have worked on lighting to keep the core zone dark.
How do you stargaze in Westhavelland?
- Head for the core zone around Gülpe; follow nature park rules, since parts are protected bird habitat.
- Use public parking and stay on public paths.
- The Sternenpark project site (sternenpark-westhavelland.de) lists events and information.
How to prepare for stargazing at Westhavelland
- Damp and cold: wetlands mean dew and mist; bring warm, waterproof layers and something dry to sit on.
- Insects: strong in summer near water.
- Timing: northern summer nights stay bright late at this latitude, so autumn to spring gives longer dark hours.
- Transport: it’s rural; plan the trip back and download maps.
The full list is in the stargazing trip checklist. I build Sky Map, so weigh this tip accordingly: download it before you travel, since its core sky map works without internet, and check Tonight’s Sky Conditions (cloud cover, humidity, best time) before you set off. For a red screen, use iPhone Color Filters (how).
More of Europe: Hortobágy, Kielder.
