Why is my iPhone saying the time out loud?
· Avinash Kumar
Voice Clock runs on iPhone and Apple Watch. The app is available in English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Chinese and Arabic.
When an iPhone starts reading the time without you asking, one of five things is doing it: VoiceOver, Siri announcing something, a Shortcuts automation, an Apple Watch setting, or a talking clock app. The pattern tells you which.
I build one of those apps (Voice Clock), so I see this question from both sides: people who want the time spoken, and people who want it to stop.
Does it happen when you touch the screen?
Then it is VoiceOver. It reads whatever is under your finger, and the status bar clock is the first thing many people touch. Turn it off in Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver, or say “Hey Siri, turn off VoiceOver”. The Accessibility Shortcut (triple-click the side button) can switch it on by accident; check Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut.
Does it happen at the same time every day?
Open Shortcuts > Automation. A Time of Day automation with Speak Text fires at the hour it was set for. Delete it or switch off Run Immediately. Family members who set up a shared phone sometimes leave one behind.
Does the sound come from your wrist?
On Apple Watch, open Settings > Clock. Speak Time reads the time when you hold two fingers on the face, which a sleeve or blanket can trigger. Settings > Accessibility > Chimes plays a sound on the hour or quarter hour. Neither runs on the phone itself.
Does it come with your music lowered?
That is the sign of an app speaking in the background. Voice Clock lowers music while it speaks, and announcements continue with the screen locked once you press Start. To stop it, open the app and stop the session, or use its Quiet Hours so it stays silent at night. Other talking clock apps behave the same way.
Quick check
| When it speaks | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| When you touch the screen | VoiceOver |
| Same time daily | Shortcuts automation |
| Two-finger touch on the watch | Speak Time |
| Every hour as a tone | Watch Chimes |
| At a fixed interval, music ducks | A talking clock app |

Questions people ask
- Why does my iPhone say the time when I touch the screen?
- That is almost always VoiceOver, which reads whatever you touch, including the clock in the status bar. Turn it off in Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver, or ask Siri to turn off VoiceOver.
- Why does my Apple Watch say the time by itself?
- Check Settings > Clock on the watch. Speak Time reads the time when you hold two fingers on the face, and Chimes in Accessibility plays a sound on the hour. A two-finger rest by accident can trigger Speak Time.
- Can a Shortcuts automation speak the time?
- Yes. A Time of Day automation with a Speak Text action will read the time at the hour you set. Look in the Shortcuts app under Automation if the voice comes at the same time every day.
