Stargazing at Grand Canyon National Park is a strong choice on any clear, moonless night, and in June the park hosts its free Grand Canyon Star Party with telescopes on the rims. The park was officially certified as an International Dark Sky Park in June 2019 after retrofitting 67% of its exterior lights.

Why is Grand Canyon a dark sky park?

To qualify, the park changed its exterior lighting to dark-sky compliant fixtures (67% of them by certification). The certificate was presented on June 22, 2019 at Mather Amphitheater on the South Rim during the 29th annual Star Party.

When is the Grand Canyon Star Party?

It runs for about a week each June. The 2019 Star Party, June 22 to 29, had nightly slide shows, telescope viewing, constellation tours and solar viewing on both rims, free of charge. Dates for the coming year appear on the park’s events pages.

How to prepare for stargazing at Grand Canyon

  • Rim edges: stay well back from the edge in the dark and use a red headlamp.
  • Cold: the rims are high; desert nights cool fast, so bring layers.
  • Timing: pick a night near new moon and check the cloud forecast.
  • Signal: coverage can be patchy; download maps and share your plan.

The full packing list is in the stargazing trip checklist. I build Sky Map, so take the tip with that in mind: download it before you lose signal, because its core sky map works without internet, and check Tonight’s Sky Conditions (cloud cover, humidity, best time) the afternoon before. For a red screen use iPhone Color Filters (how).

Nearby Southwest skies: Bryce Canyon, Death Valley.
