Stargazing at Bryce Canyon: when are the ranger programs?

Stargazing at Bryce Canyon in southern Utah is best during the new moon week, and in June and July rangers run free telescope nights at Sunset Point. The park became an International Dark Sky Park in 2019; high elevation, clean air and remoteness give it some of the darkest skies in the country, the NPS says.

How high is Bryce Canyon?

The Visitor Center is at 7,894 ft (2,406 m) and Sunset Point at 8,000 ft (2,438 m); Rainbow Point reaches 9,115 ft. Thin, clean air helps the view, and it also means cold nights.

Ranger astronomy programs

  • Night Sky Telescope Programs: generally Thursday to Saturday, June to July, around 9:45 pm at Sunset Point, 1 to 1.5 hours, free, no reservation.
  • About 100 astronomy programs a year in total, per the park.
  • Full Moon Hikes: ticketed, flashlights prohibited, lug-traction footwear required.
  • Astronomy Festival: each June near new moon. In 2026 it was June 11 to 13, with telescopes 10 pm to midnight, reached by free shuttle. White flashlights are prohibited on the telescope field.

How to prepare for stargazing at Bryce Canyon

  • Cold and altitude: at 8,000 ft, pack warm layers even in summer.
  • Timing: the park says the darkest time is the week of the new moon or the week before.
  • Check the calendar: programs depend on weather; confirm at the Visitor Center or the park calendar.
  • Offline maps and a plan shared with someone help on the plateau roads.

The full list is in the stargazing trip checklist. I build Sky Map, so take the tip with that in mind: download it before you lose signal, because its core sky map works without internet, and check Tonight’s Sky Conditions (cloud cover, humidity, best time) the afternoon before. For a red screen use iPhone Color Filters (how).

Nearby: Grand Canyon, Death Valley. Bryce’s dark sky also shows the Andromeda Galaxy to the eye.
