How to add up a pile of receipts by reading them out loud
· Avinash Kumar
Voice Calculator runs on iPhone. The app is available in English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese.
At the end of the month there’s a stack of receipts and one number you need: the total. Typing them in is slow, and one wrong key spoils the answer with no way to see where.
A routine that works
- Sort the receipts into one pile, face up.
- Tap the mic and read only the totals: “12.40 plus 8.99 plus 23.10…”
- Turn each receipt over as you read it.
- Glance at the tape every few receipts to make sure each number landed right.
- Say “equals”.
The tape is the step that saves you. If the total looks wrong, you can see the line where “18.90” became “80.90”.
Reading numbers so they’re heard right
- Say “point” for decimals: “twelve point four zero”.
- Pause briefly between numbers.
- For round amounts, “forty” and “fourteen” are the classic mix-up. Say “four zero” if the app keeps mishearing.
Receipts on screen
If your receipts are photos, a banking app or a PDF, you don’t have to switch apps. Start the mic, open the other app and read as you scroll. The total stays in the Dynamic Island.
Exporting
You can export the tape as CSV or plain text, which helps if someone else does your bookkeeping. See calculator history and export.

Questions people ask
- What if I misread one receipt?
- Tap that line on the tape and fix it. The total updates without re-entering the rest.
