Voice calculator, Siri or an AI chatbot: which to use for everyday math

· Avinash Kumar

Voice Calculator runs on iPhone. The app is available in English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese.

There are three ways to do maths by voice on an iPhone. Each fits a different job.

Siri

Good for one quick question: “What’s 15% of 80?” You get an answer in a second. For a list of twenty numbers it’s awkward: one long sentence, no way to check each number, and if one was misheard, you start over.

AI chat apps

Good when you need an explanation: how to work out a loan, what a formula means. Less good as a calculator. They can be confidently wrong with arithmetic, and in voice mode you often can’t see exactly which numbers were heard. Our product site has a longer comparison: voice calculator vs AI chat math.

A voice calculator with a tape

Good for adding up many numbers you need to trust: receipts, a bank statement, stock counts. Each entry is shown, you can fix one, and you hear the total.

Cool voice calculator

Very intuitive voice calculation

A simple rule

  • One sum, any phone: Siri.
  • “How do I work this out?”: a chatbot, then check the numbers yourself.
  • A column of figures that has to be right: a calculator that shows what it heard.

Related: why seeing what was heard matters.

Questions people ask

Can Siri add a list of numbers?
Siri handles one spoken expression at a time. It doesn't keep a running tape you can scroll back through and correct.

Voice Calculator

A calculator you talk to: say the numbers, check each one on the tape, hear the total.
