HEIC to JPG on iPhone: convert many at once, or stop HEIC at the source

· Avinash Kumar

Batchly runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC. It’s efficient, but a surprising number of upload forms, older Windows setups and print shops still want JPEG.

Fix 1: shoot JPEG from now on

Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPEG. The cost: they take more space, and some features like 48 MP HEIF Max need High Efficiency.

Fix 2: convert when copying to a computer

Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC › Automatic. Photos copied over USB are converted to JPEG on the way. This doesn’t help with uploads from the phone.

Fix 3: convert a batch on the phone

For photos you already have:

  1. Select them in Batchly.
  2. Add a Convert step and choose JPEG (PNG and TIFF are also available).
  3. Optionally add Compress to control file size.
  4. Export to Files for uploading, or to Photos.

Conversion runs on the device. Your originals stay as they were unless you choose to replace them.

Quick test

Not sure if a file is HEIC? In Files, long-press › Get Info shows the type.

Questions people ask

Is HEIC worse quality than JPG?
No. HEIC stores similar quality in roughly half the space. The only problem is compatibility.
Will converting lose quality?
A little, as with any JPEG save. At high quality settings you won't see it.

Batchly

Resize, compress, watermark and convert hundreds of photos at once, on the device.
