How to batch resize photos on iPhone
· Avinash Kumar
Batchly runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
The Photos app can’t resize to a pixel size. So when a client, a website or a marketplace asks for “1600 px on the long side”, you need another tool.
The free way: Shortcuts
Apple’s Shortcuts app has a Resize Image action. Build a shortcut with “Select Photos” → “Resize Image” (set a width) → “Save to Photo Album”. It works, with limits:
- You set a width, so vertical and horizontal photos come out at different sizes.
- Each change means editing the shortcut.
- There’s no watermark or compression step without more actions.
For an occasional batch, it’s enough.
The faster way: Batchly
I make Batchly, so weigh this accordingly.
- Pick the photos.
- Add a Resize step. Choose pixels, a percentage, or a preset (Instagram, Etsy, eBay).
- Turn on “Use longer side and shorter side” and pick a shape: Original, 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, 5:4 or 1:1. “Original” keeps each photo’s own shape, so you just enter the long side.
- Export to Photos or to Files.
Everything runs on the device, offline. EXIF, date, location and copyright data are kept on the new files.
Why “long edge” matters
If half your photos are vertical, “width 1600” makes them 1600 wide and 2400 tall, while the horizontal ones are 1600 × 1067. Resizing by the long edge makes every photo 1600 px on its longest side.
Great Batch Photo Editing + Much, Much More
As a professional sports photographer, this app allows you to quickly batch resize images, plus do so much more. This app has even eliminated the need for me to edit my photos on a PC. As a photographer who needs to provide a selection of photos during a sporting event for the team to use for their social media, I am able to quickly transfer photos from my DSLR camera to my iPad using the camera makers app. Even though Batchly allows for bulk editing of photos, I utilize a pro photography editing app to quickly crop and touch up images as needed. The next step is where the Batchly app shines, as it allows me to do several batch editing steps the other apps don’t do. This app allows you to batch resize all of the images to the same dimensions utilizing the long edge length, for when you have both portrait and landscape style photos. This keeps all of the images uniform in size and file size. The are several ratio options that can be select as well. Resizing and selecting the quality output reduces the files size of a 50-60MP photo, also allowing for quicker uploads to my website for the client to quickly view and download as desired. This app goes one step further and allows you to add additional text to the original file name, such as the date, and in my case, I also add my name as well. The app then replaces the original photos in the Photo app, moving the originals to the deleted folder (just in case) and gives you a new set of uniformed photos. The photos can also be exported to the Files app. This then allows for quick and easy uploading or sharing of the photos. When I first tried this app, it initially did not do some of the amazing features that it currently does, but In providing feedback to the app developer, they took those suggestions and quickly implemented them, exceeding my expectations. This is a great little app, with big results.
