Instagram photo size in 2026: which shape to post
· Avinash Kumar
Batchly runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
In 2025 Instagram switched the profile grid to tall 3:4 tiles. Old square-grid habits stopped lining up.
The sizes
| Shape | Pixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tall portrait 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 | Not cropped in feed or grid when posted from the app |
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | Safest for scheduling tools; grid trims about 34 px per side |
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Grid trims the sides more |
| Horizontal 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 | Smallest on screen |
| Stories, Reels | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
Which to pick
- Posting from your phone: 3:4.
- Scheduling through Buffer, Later and similar tools: 4:5, because they publish through Meta’s API.
- Keep logos and text slightly in from the left and right edges either way.
Resizing a shoot
In Batchly:
- Crop to 3:4 or 4:5.
- Resize to 1080 px wide.
- Optional Watermark for credit.
- Export to Photos and post.
The Resize step also has an Instagram preset.
Related: batch resize photos and watermark many photos.
Questions people ask
- What's the best Instagram post size?
- 1080 × 1440 (3:4) if you post from the app. 1080 × 1350 (4:5) if you schedule through a tool, because Meta's publishing API still tops out at 4:5.
- Why 1080 px wide?
- Instagram displays feed photos at up to 1080 px wide. Larger uploads are scaled down.
