What size should real estate photos be?
· Avinash Kumar
Batchly runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
It depends on your MLS. Each one sets its own maximum dimensions, file size and number of photos, and the big listing portals take their images from those feeds. What’s consistent: horizontal photos, usually 3:2 or 4:3, and files kept small enough for the upload limit.
Find your limits
Look for your MLS’s photo or media upload rules. Write down:
- Maximum width and height in pixels.
- Maximum file size per photo.
- Maximum number of photos.
- Whether watermarks or logos are allowed. Many MLSs ban branding on listing photos.
Ratio
Most cameras shoot 3:2, iPhones 4:3. Either works in galleries. Mixing them in one listing makes the slideshow jump, so pick one for the whole set.
Resize the whole shoot at once
Agents and photographers often come back with 30 to 60 photos per property. In Batchly (my app):
- Pick the set.
- Crop to 3:2 or 4:3 so every photo matches.
- Resize by long edge to your MLS’s maximum width.
- Compress to get under the file-size limit.
- Save it as a workflow for the next listing.
The free version is capped at 7 photos per batch; a full property shoot needs Pro. Everything runs on the device, offline, and the originals stay untouched for the photographer’s archive.
Don’t use the watermark step if your MLS bans branding.

Questions people ask
- Is there a standard MLS photo size?
- No. Each MLS sets its own maximum dimensions, file size and photo count. Check your MLS's upload rules or ask its support.
- Should real estate photos be horizontal or portrait?
- Horizontal. Listing sites and MLS galleries are built around horizontal images, usually 3:2 or 4:3.
- What if my photos are too big for the MLS?
- Resize to the MLS's maximum width and compress until each file is under its file-size limit. Doing the whole shoot in one batch keeps them consistent.
