Bluetooth chat on iPhone: how it works

· Avinash Kumar

Flight Mode Chat runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is the same radio your phone uses for earbuds and watches. A Bluetooth chat app uses it to send small packets of data, your messages, straight to other phones.

Setting it up

  1. Install Flight Mode Chat on both phones while you still have internet.
  2. Open it and allow Bluetooth access when iOS asks.
  3. Keep Bluetooth on (it can stay on in Airplane Mode).
  4. Nearby users appear automatically. Pick a public channel or start a private chat.

The app interface is in English. You can write messages in any language.

Range

Bluetooth reaches across a room or a few rows of seats, not across a town. Walls, bodies and metal shorten it. Flight Mode Chat uses a mesh: phones that run the app can pass messages along, so a crowd with many users covers more ground than two phones alone.

Battery

People on Reddit worry that a Bluetooth messenger would “tank your phone battery”. BLE is built for low power, but scanning for nearby phones isn’t free. On a festival day, bring a power bank.

What you can send

Text, photos, voice notes, files and contacts. Bigger files take longer over Bluetooth than over Wi-Fi.
