Can you text on a plane without Wi-Fi?
· Avinash Kumar
Flight Mode Chat runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
Short answer: not by SMS. Text messages need a cell network, and in airplane mode your phone doesn’t connect to one.
Your options
- In-flight Wi-Fi. iMessage and WhatsApp work over it. Some airlines offer free messaging-only plans; check yours.
- Bluetooth chat with people on the same plane. No Wi-Fi needed. Both of you install the same app before boarding.
- Wait. Messages you queue up send when you land.
How the Bluetooth option works
Turning on Airplane Mode switches off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but you can switch Bluetooth back on in Control Center. Flight Mode Chat then finds nearby phones running the app. You can message your travel partner three rows back, or swap photos without paying for Wi-Fi.
Fun App
Found this app by accident and really like it. Very nice UI worked surprisingly reliable. Tested it with my wife only at home so far, but will definitely use it on the plane or other occasions.

What it can’t do
It can’t reach anyone on the ground or in another plane. Range is limited to people near you in the cabin; seats and bodies block some of the signal.
