Chatting with other passengers on a plane

· Avinash Kumar

Flight Mode Chat runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.

Airlines split groups across the cabin all the time. Passing notes over seats gets old fast.

Group trips and split seats

Everyone installs Flight Mode Chat before boarding. Once in the air: Airplane Mode on, Bluetooth on, open the app. Start a private chat or a group in a public channel. You can coordinate who’s queuing for the toilet, share photos of the view, or decide where to meet after landing.

Public channels

Public channels show posts to people nearby running the app. Some use them for “anyone else on the connecting flight to Lisbon?” Be thoughtful: you’re in a confined space with strangers for hours.

Etiquette

  • Don’t post photos of other passengers.
  • Keep public posts short and friendly.
  • If someone doesn’t reply, leave it.

Privacy

Private chats are end-to-end encrypted, and nothing goes through a server. Still, don’t share what you wouldn’t say out loud in the cabin.

Fun App

Found this app by accident and really like it. Very nice UI worked surprisingly reliable. Tested it with my wife only at home so far, but will definitely use it on the plane or other occasions.
