How to chat without internet on iPhone
· Avinash Kumar
Flight Mode Chat runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
Messaging apps need a network. When there’s none (a plane, a basement venue, a valley with no masts) you need something that talks phone to phone.
What iPhone does on its own
- iMessage and WhatsApp: need Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- SMS: needs a cell network.
- AirDrop: sends files to nearby Apple devices without internet. Good for a photo, no use for a conversation.
- Emergency SOS via satellite: on iPhone 14 and later, in supported countries, for emergencies.
Bluetooth chat apps
Apps like Flight Mode Chat (which I make) use Bluetooth Low Energy to send messages directly between phones. No internet, no servers, no SIM. In Flight Mode Chat you can send text, photos, voice notes, files and contacts, in public channels or private chats, end-to-end encrypted.
The honest limits
- Both people need the app. Install it before you lose signal.
- Range. Bluetooth reaches across a room or a few rows of seats, not across a town. Walls, bodies and metal shorten it. Flight Mode Chat builds a mesh, so the more people nearby run it, the further a message can travel.
- Not for emergencies alone. Use official channels when you can.
Best offline messenger
What I like most of it that it works without internet, so we can use it even while hiking.
