How to batch rename photos on iPhone
· Avinash Kumar
Batchly runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
Batchly
Download on the App StoreCamera names like IMG_4821.JPG tell a client or a website nothing. Renaming them one by one on an iPhone takes forever, so here are the ways to rename a whole batch.
One at a time: the Files app
In Files, long-press a photo, tap Rename, type, done. The Photos app doesn’t let you edit file names at all. Fine for three photos, not for 300.
The free way: Shortcuts
The Shortcuts app has a Rename File action. A shortcut that takes the selected files, renames each one and saves it to a folder works, but you have to build the loop yourself and test it before trusting it with a shoot.
The faster way: Batchly
I make Batchly, so weigh this accordingly.
- Pick all the photos.
- Use Batchly’s rename option. It renames every selected photo in one go.
- Chain other steps if you need them: resize, compress, watermark.
- Export to Photos or to Files.
A sports photographer who reviewed the app on the App Store adds text such as the date and his own name to the original file names before delivering a set to a team. Everything runs on the device, offline, and the metadata (date, location, copyright) stays on the new files.
What Batchly’s rename can do
- Rename all selected files at once
- Numbering
- Prefix
- Suffix
- Date-based names
For naming patterns that sort well, see renaming photos by date and number.
Free vs Pro
Batchly’s free version processes up to 7 photos at a time. Pro removes the limit and lets you save workflows.
