What size should Shopify product images be?
· Avinash Kumar
Batchly runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
Shopify recommends 2048 × 2048 px for square product images and accepts uploads up to 5000 × 5000 px and 20 MB. The most important thing is consistency: pick one ratio for your whole catalogue so collection pages line up.
This guide isn’t affiliated with Shopify; the numbers are from Shopify’s help center as of October 2026.
Choosing a ratio
| Ratio | Size | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Square 1:1 | 2048 × 2048 | Most themes, mixed catalogues |
| Portrait 4:5 | 1600 × 2000 | Clothing, tall products |
| Horizontal 3:2 | 2048 × 1365 | Furniture, wide items |
Check your theme’s settings: many let you choose square, portrait or “natural” for collection grids. Match your photos to that.
Keep files small
Shopify serves resized versions to visitors, but a store full of 15 MB originals still slows uploads and some themes. A 2048 px JPEG at good quality is usually a few hundred KB.

Questions people ask
- What image size does Shopify recommend for products?
- Shopify's help center recommends 2048 × 2048 px for square product images. It accepts images up to 5000 × 5000 px and 20 MB.
- Do all product images need the same ratio?
- Not technically, but most themes look cleaner when every product uses the same ratio. Mixed ratios make collection grids jump.
- Is a bigger image always better?
- No. 2048 px is enough for zoom on most themes. Larger files only slow your store down.
