Chatting abroad without roaming or a local SIM: what an offline chat can and cannot do
· Avinash Kumar
Flight Mode Chat runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
Flight Mode Chat
Download on the App StoreAn offline Bluetooth chat needs no roaming and no local SIM, but it can only talk to people near you who also run the app. It cannot call home, send SMS or reach anyone who is far away.
Two different problems
Travelling abroad raises two separate needs. One is staying in touch with people back home. The other is staying in touch with the people you are travelling with, in places where your plan does not work or data is expensive.
An offline chat helps only with the second one. For the first, you need a real connection: hotel or cafe Wi-Fi, a local eSIM or SIM, or a roaming package from your carrier. Check your own carrier’s terms, since they differ widely.
Free options first
Wi-Fi calling and messaging apps work over any Wi-Fi you can reach, and they cost nothing extra. Download offline maps and translations before you fly. Those cover most of what people worry about when they land.
Where Flight Mode Chat fits
I build Flight Mode Chat, so weigh this section accordingly. The app chats with nearby people over Bluetooth Low Energy. It uses no internet, no servers and no SIM, so there is nothing to roam on. It sends text, images, voice notes, files and contacts, with end-to-end encryption, in private chats or public channels, and it finds nearby users automatically. It runs on iPhone and iPad.
Abroad, this suits a few situations:
- Your group is split across a market, a museum or a hotel, and you do not want to use data to say where you are.
- A child’s iPad has no SIM but you want to keep in touch with them across a campsite or a resort.
- You are on a flight or a boat, with Wi-Fi that is slow or paid, and you want to talk to a travel companion.
What it cannot do
Spell this out before you rely on it.
- It cannot send SMS or iMessage.
- It cannot make calls.
- It cannot reach people back home, or anyone far from you.
- It works only with people close by who installed the same app, so if your companions skip the install, there is nobody to talk to.
- Bluetooth range is short and varies with walls, crowds and metal. I won’t quote a figure.
Do not treat it as a safety net. If you need to reach someone in an emergency, use a phone connection and local emergency services.
A sensible setup for a trip
- Install the app on every phone and tablet in your group before you leave, while you have a normal connection.
- Test it together at the airport or hotel.
- Keep a plan for the home connection too: a SIM, eSIM or Wi-Fi for the people who are not with you.
- Agree on meeting points, so a lost Bluetooth link does not leave anyone stranded.
The interface is in English only, though your messages can be in any language, which is handy when your group speaks something other than English.
