Encrypted offline chat: privacy without servers

· Avinash Kumar

Flight Mode Chat runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.

Flight Mode Chat sends messages directly between phones, without servers, and encrypts private chats end to end.

What that protects

  • No server copy. There’s no company database holding your conversation.
  • Relays can’t read. In a mesh, other phones may carry your message, but encrypted private messages stay unreadable to them.

What it doesn’t protect

  • Public channels are public. Anyone nearby with the app can read them.
  • Your screen. Someone looking over your shoulder sees what you see.
  • The other person. They can screenshot or show the message to others.
  • Presence. Being nearby with the app open makes you visible to other users.

Good habits

  • Use private chats for anything personal.
  • Choose a display name that doesn’t reveal more than you want.
  • Turn Bluetooth off or close the app when you don’t want to be seen nearby.

Questions people ask

Can a relay phone see who I talk to?
