Is there a walkie-talkie app that works without internet on iPhone?
· Avinash Kumar
Flight Mode Chat runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
Most walkie-talkie apps don’t. Apple Watch Walkie-Talkie, Zello and similar apps send your voice over the internet, so they stop when Wi-Fi and mobile data are gone. Without a network, iPhones can still swap messages and recorded voice notes over Bluetooth if both run the same app and stay close together.
I make Flight Mode Chat, one of the Bluetooth apps, so read the comparison with that in mind.
What needs internet
| Option | Works with no signal? |
|---|---|
| Apple Watch Walkie-Talkie | No, runs over FaceTime audio |
| Zello and other PTT apps | No, server-based |
| Phone calls, FaceTime | No |
| Bluetooth chat apps | Yes, nearby phones only |
| Two-way radios (PMR446, FRS) | Yes, kilometres, no phone needed |
Voice notes versus live talk
A real walkie-talkie streams your voice while you hold the button. Flight Mode Chat sends text, images, files and voice notes: you record, send, and the other person plays it. It works over Bluetooth Low Energy with no internet, no servers and no SIM, with end-to-end encryption. For most “where are you?” moments a voice note is enough. For back-and-forth live talk, it isn’t the same thing.
Range
Bluetooth from a phone reaches tens of metres in open space. Walls, bodies and metal shorten it. That suits a campsite, a festival patch or a plane cabin. It does not suit a ski resort spread over a mountain; there, radios are the honest answer.
Before you lose signal
- Install the app on every phone while you still have internet.
- Open it once together so the phones find each other.
- Agree on a meeting point in case you drift out of range.

Questions people ask
- Does Apple Watch Walkie-Talkie work without internet?
- No. It needs the watch or the paired iPhone to have Wi-Fi or cellular, because it runs over FaceTime audio.
- Can two iPhones talk without internet?
- They can exchange messages and voice notes over Bluetooth with an app built for it, as long as both are close and run the same app. Live push-to-talk voice over Bluetooth is rare on iPhone.
- What is the range without internet?
- Bluetooth reaches roughly tens of metres in open space and less through walls and crowds. For kilometres you need radios.
