How to send photos, voice notes and files without internet on iPhone
· Avinash Kumar
Flight Mode Chat runs on iPhone and iPad. The app interface is in English.
Flight Mode Chat
Download on the App StoreYou can, as long as the other person is close by and has the same app. Photos, voice notes and files can travel straight from one iPhone to another over Bluetooth, with no Wi-Fi, no mobile data and no SIM involved.
What iPhone does without a connection
iMessage, WhatsApp and similar apps hand your photo to a server, so they wait for a network. AirDrop is the free built-in answer for a single file between nearby Apple devices, and it works well when you want to hand over one picture. It is a transfer tool, though, with no conversation attached.
Where a Bluetooth chat app fits
I build Flight Mode Chat, so weigh this section with that in mind. The app sends messages between nearby phones over Bluetooth Low Energy. Besides text, you can send:
- images from your photo library
- voice notes you record in the chat
- files
- contacts
Everything is end-to-end encrypted, and nothing passes through a server because there is none. You can use it on iPhone and iPad.
How to send a photo or voice note
- Install the app on both phones while you still have internet. Afterwards neither phone needs a connection.
- Open the app on both. It finds nearby users automatically.
- Start a private chat with the person, or post in a public channel if you want everyone nearby to see it.
- Pick a photo or file to attach, or record a voice note.
- Send. The other phone receives it directly.
If you want a quick example: you are on a flight, the seat next to you holds a friend, and you want to share a photo from the trip. Airplane Mode is on, Bluetooth is back on, and the photo arrives in the chat without anyone paying for in-flight Wi-Fi.
Limits worth knowing
Both phones need the app. The other person cannot receive anything through iMessage or SMS from this setup, and the app cannot reach people who are far away. Bluetooth covers a short distance, and walls and crowds shorten it further. I won’t give you a distance figure because it changes with every room.
Large files and long voice notes take longer than short ones, since the link is a low-energy radio and not a Wi-Fi connection. Send them while both people stay put.
Stay close to the other person until they have received what you sent.

Questions people ask
- Can I send a photo to someone on iPhone with no Wi-Fi or data?
- Yes, when the person is nearby and also runs a Bluetooth chat app such as Flight Mode Chat. The photo travels directly between the two phones.
- Do voice notes and files need the internet too?
- In Flight Mode Chat they do not. Text, images, voice notes, files and contacts all go over Bluetooth Low Energy, with no internet, no servers and no SIM.
- Can I send a photo to a friend in another city this way?
- No. The app reaches only nearby people who also run it. For someone far away you need a normal connection.
